CIS accountants for builders and trades

Tax returns for CIS subcontractors, monthly CIS returns for contractors and plain advice on how to set up your business, across Blackpool and the Fylde Coast.

Subcontractor Self Assessment: £298 / year, fixed price with no hidden extras

The Construction Industry Scheme means contractors take tax off your pay before it reaches you, usually at 20% if you are registered. That money counts towards your tax bill, but it is taken before your expenses and personal allowance are considered. Get your return right and a lot of subcontractors find they are owed money back.

For CIS subcontractors

  • Prepare and file your Self Assessment tax return, including all CIS deductions
  • Reconcile your payment and deduction statements so nothing is missed
  • Claim every allowable expense, from tools and protective clothing to van and travel costs
  • Claim back any tax you have overpaid through your return
  • Help you register for CIS and gross payment status if it suits your business

For contractors

  • Verify subcontractors with HMRC before you pay them
  • Work out deductions and file your monthly CIS return
  • Issue payment and deduction statements to your subcontractors
  • Run payroll for any employees alongside your CIS returns

Monthly CIS returns and bookkeeping are quoted on request, based on how many subcontractors you pay. You will have a fixed price in writing before we start.

Sole trader or limited company?

Plenty of tradespeople start as sole traders and later wonder whether a limited company would save tax. The answer depends on your profit, how you take money out and how much admin you want. We will run the figures for you. Our guide to sole trader vs limited company is a good place to start, and our limited company accounts are a fixed £495 a year.

Not sure whether you are owed a refund? Ring us on 01253 978911 and we will tell you what we need to check.

Common questions

CIS FAQs

Can I get a CIS tax refund?

Often, yes. Contractors deduct tax from your pay under CIS before you have claimed any expenses or your personal allowance, so many subcontractors have paid more than they owe. The refund comes through your Self Assessment tax return once it is filed.

How much does a CIS subcontractor tax return cost?

A subcontractor Self Assessment tax return is our standard fixed fee of £298 a year. Monthly CIS returns for contractors and bookkeeping are quoted on request, so you know the full price before we start.

I'm a contractor. Can you do my monthly CIS returns?

Yes. We verify your subcontractors with HMRC, work out the deductions, file your monthly CIS return and send the payment and deduction statements. We quote this on request based on how many subcontractors you pay.

Should I be a sole trader or a limited company?

It depends on your profit, how you want to pay yourself and how much admin you are happy with. We will run the numbers for your situation. Our guide to sole trader vs limited company explains the main differences.

What expenses can I claim in construction?

Typically tools, protective clothing, materials you pay for, van and travel costs to sites, phone costs and insurance, as long as they are for the business. Our allowable expenses guide covers the details.
