Making Tax Digital — FAQs
What counts as my qualifying income for MTD?
Your qualifying income is your gross (before expenses) self-employment turnover plus your gross property/rental income added together. If that combined figure is over the threshold for a given year, MTD for Income Tax applies to you from that point.
When does Making Tax Digital for Income Tax start?
It's phased by qualifying income: over £50,000 from 6 April 2026, over £30,000 from April 2027, and over £20,000 from April 2028. Your status is judged on your most recent tax return.
How much does it cost to have Sorley Accountants handle MTD?
We handle all four quarterly updates and your final declaration for £195 per quarter, fixed. We also get you onto the right MTD-compatible software and set everything up for you.
Is this calculator accurate for my situation?
It gives a clear, reliable indication based on the published HMRC thresholds. Edge cases — such as partnerships, jointly owned property or income spread across several sources — are best confirmed with us. Get in touch and we'll check in minutes.
